Mayoral candidate Anthony Perruzza announced his plan to build 5,000 units of truly affordable housing in the next two years. “We can have $1000/month housing in Toronto and build 5,000 units within two years,” said Perruzza. “We don’t have to continue wasting our time with vague promises or pretending we’ll invest money we don’t have.” Perruzza’s smart, practical solution adapts successful models that work and leverages City resources to lower the costs of building housing. “We can lease city lands, guarantee loans and use built-form housing,” said Perruzza. “We already have a model that works at York University that can be adapted to build shelters and transitional housing, build housing for seniors and for families.” Perruzza’s plan will build 5,000 units within two years that can go to the market at a rental price of $1000/month or less. “Let’s stop making promises and wasting time,” said Perruzza. “Let’s start building the housing this city needs.” Housing is completely unaffordable in Toronto today: * Working people are paying 60% or 70% of their wages on rent * Trained and talented Torontonians are leaving the city altogether * Young people are losing hope of ever renting or owning a home |
